I am far-sighted. I see distances great, but words in books look like lines of smudge to me until I put on glasses. I also have astigmatism. I’ve heard and read that Lasik is best only for near-sighted people and is contra-indicated for both far-sightedness and astigmatism. I would like to hear from people who have had lasik for these conditions or work in the industry who would have knowledge about this. Any pointers to credible references would be appreciated!
Also, I’ve seen too many upbeat advertisements and too little real information so I don’t know what to think. I’ve heard Lasik is great from some people (near-sighted people) but I am a little nervous considering the ads on radio who advertisements sound like, "We’ll do one eye for 9 and you get the second one FREE! But only for a limited time! Call now to get this special deal! You’ll be happy! Eye guarantee it!"
You know what I mean?
I have a few years to go before I’m 40. I’ve been wearing glasses for almost 10 years and have been told by both an ophthalmologist and my optometrist that I’m farsighted. Haven’t seen the ophthalmologist in a while – I just go in and get the optometrist to check me for my yearly checkup and prescription. Eyesight is getting worse each time, but not alarmingly so.

I’m thinking about getting circle lenses but I have astigmatism and the website I want to order from says you shouldn’t wear circle lenses if you have astigmatism over 150. So I want to know if I can find out what my astigmatism grade is on my box of regular contact lenses? Haha if that makes any sense. Anyway thanks in advance!

I got serious astigmatism after the lasik surgery, not right after the surgery but gradually getting worse, image can be well recognized but with a cluster of gleam around, and the deepness of real image is slightly lightened, I didn’t pay attention to it first but afterwards the symptom is getting worse, I don’t know what the problem is, I do read a lot and face computer everyday, but before I got the surgery my eyes keep in the steady state since 5 years ago without getting worse, so I wanna find the reason. I wonder if it is because when I study, when I concentrate, I unconsciously strain my eyes, which strain the cornea causing the deformation of cornea (the cornea is thinner than before for it’s cut by lasik surgery) . So the cornea is becoming thinner and thinner, it’s suppose to be very dangerous if the cornea become thinner, which is what I concern about, I wish I could stop the diaster but the situation is still getting worse, can somebody help me? THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
I had lasik 1year and a half ago, I have come to the doctor for several times but they just told me it was the healing period and it will be all right but the fact is the healing period is only 3-12month and my eyes are getting worse obviously, they are just too irresponsable, they told me to use eyedrop to keep my eyes wet, although the vision can be improved, I can spend my rest of life continually droping eyedrop to keep my vision, I need a radical cure. Actually even the stop of regression are acceptable, I can still see considerably well in middle distance, I’m just concern that I’ll be blind in several years according to the current tendency.
correct some of my wrong words in above paragraph into "I can’t spend my rest of life continually droping eyedrop to keep my vision."
So now the only problem is to stop the regression, the lasik surgery was actually quite successful, the moment I came out my eye sight was excellent. and later got astigmatism in about 1 month after the surgery.

Here’s the catch – 1) my vision, even though my contacts bother me, isn’t that bad. About -2 in each eye. 2) I have an astigmatism that I’ve heard is difficult to correct with laser surgery.
Does anyone have a similar situation and had the surgery? Did it work? Any problems after surgery?

I wear glasses for school, but now I think I need to wear them all the time. When shopping, it’s hard to look at the prices and stuff. I don’t want to wear my glasses all the time! I probably have astigmatism because I squint a lot.
How much will a year supply of contacts with astigmatism cost?
Oh, and my parents have insurance for me, will the check-up thinngy be free? I don’t get how insurance works.
Thanks.

I’m with acuvue advance for astig. at the moment, and i’ve tried purevision torics.. but are there any brand new lenses i could potentially try?
In response to Willow9 – i was basically looking for lenses that are better for my dry eye symptoms.. I found that the purevision felt like i had glass in my eyes, and the acuvue advances seem to dry out very quickly.. So something else would hopefully be better..

I had contacts before but, it seemed to be very uncomfortable. Kinda like my eye was not breathing. lol So I would prefer the breathable type and comfort is another plus!!!
Yes you are right going to the Dr. would be a good way of finding out which one to buy. I prefer to ask someone who has worn contacts before and might have been through the same problem. This way I get the Drs. advice and also The advice from someone who can relate.

i had my glasses made last month, so the optalmologist(is that what they call it?) tested my eyes. it showed i have astigmatism in both eyes. then i had another pair of glasses made just now on a different eye center. the optalmologist working there tested my eyes and it showed i don’t have astigmatism now. is it possible? i’m quite skeptical about it. because i’ve had had astigmatism for 2 years and the first optalmologist told me that my eyes are unlikely to go back to the normal vision. i kept telling her about my astigmatism but she insists that the first optalmologist is wrong. she’s annoying. the optalmologist who tested me last year told me though that i have astigmatism in the right eye. is it okay to wear glasses w/ different grades simultaneously? i still want to wear the glasses i bought last month. is it okay? or will it destroy my eyes? can astigmatism get worse if i wear glasses without grades for astigmatism(in case i really do have astigmatism)?

K I went to an optometrist a couple of weeks ago, it’s been a while since I’ve had an eye exam. But he did the fit test etc. and I picked out my contacts. I know I have an astigmatism should I have mentioned this. Cause I’m pretty sure your supposed to get a thicker lens for an astigmatism. And I think both of my contact lenses are soft. I also got glasses from the same place both with the same prescription. And the glasses are a little uncomfortable to see through.

my wife went a got her eyes checked today for contacts. We decided to use a different doctor, and this doctor determined that she had an astigmatism with a power of -4.5. Is this possible??? He also wanted my wife to use toric lenses instead of normal ones that she have had no problems with in the past six years. To me it sounds like this doctor is trying to pawn my wife with more expensive contacts to make more profit for them. My eyes are pretty bad at -9.5 power and I have an astigmatism and I have never used toric lenses and seen just fine. Any advice or help would be great. Thanks
