Confused about contact lenses?
About two years ago, my eye doctor told me that I have astigmatism in one of my eyes. I didn’t think much of it and got glasses. This year, I got braces and I’m wishing I had gotten contact lenses. I’m a teenage girl and really don’t want to look "nerdy" and I hate wearing glasses so I think I should get contacts.
My mom told me that I could get contact lenses this year, but I have no idea where to start. I’d like to get color contacts to lighten up my almost black eyes and make them look a pretty color. I’ved looked at a few websites that sell color contacts, but they are not made for people with astigmatism. I’ve also read about "toric" lenses. What are they and can I wear them if I only have astigmatism in one eye? Can I wear normal lenses and would anything happen if I did? Are there any brands that you use that sell color contacts for people with astigmatism? Should I just get non-color contacts?
Thank you and sorry if that was kind of long. =)

If you only have astigmatism in one eye then you might only need a toric lense for one eye. Toric lenses correct the astigmatism. People like me that are mostly just nearsighted dont have to wear a toric lense because the other power that I need is strong enough to compensate for the small astigmatism correction that I have. Your eye doctor could tell you if you will be required to wear a toric lense. Contact lense prescriptions are usually just good for a year so you’ll need an exam and they will do whats called a contact lense fitting because everybodys eye ball is a different shape and they have to experiment to see what fits you. Contact lenses should be available for astigmatism and for dark eyes. Those 2 combinations call for a contact with a lot of technology so just know that everything total will probably be pretty expensive. If you have vision insurance some of it or all may be covered.
those are all good questions.
toric = contacts for astigmatism.
the only widespread, non-custom colored contact lens for astigmatism is freshlook colorblends toric, which is an older product with an (IMO) inferior design.
talk to your doc about whether you could wear "normal" lenses or not. you’ll have to get "fitted" for contacts anyway, you can’t just go buy some.
To get contact lenses, start here: You need an eye examination from an doctor of optometry (O.D.).
The doctor will do a complete eye health examination and a contact lens examination. Once the contact lens examination is complete, you will get a prescription for the lenses to be filled.
Contact lenses are prescription medical devices that compensate for your astigmatism. There are limited contact lenses to color your eye with astigmatism, and you may see clearer with lenses that don’t alter your eye color.
Contact lenses can compensate for whatever focusing difficulty you have in either eye.
There is no contact lens called a "normal" lens, but perhaps you refer to a lens that doesn’t correct astigmatism. During the eye & contact lens examination, the doctor will determine which lens is appropriate for each eye’s vision, comfort, and physiologic compatibility.
Start with the eye examination.
i have astigmatism in both eyes and i have a toric lens in one eye, it’s just a little thicker than the other lens. anyway from what i understand you can still get colored lenses. don’t look online go to your eye doctor they have colored lense too and they can guide you.
