How can eye doctors tell the difference between…?

How can they tell the difference between having astigmatism and being both near sigted AND far sighted? My sister and I were talking about this, and neither of us really know.

Astigmatism is only a particular version of short or long sight, and an Rx such as +1.00 DS / -2.00DC ax 180
is for an eye that is longsighted in one meridian, (+1) shortsighted in the other (-1), and as a result has two dioptres of astigmatism (simply the difference between the two meridians)
It can be written the other way:
-1.00 DS /+2.00 DC ax 90 is the same prescription, starting to measure from the shortsighted meridian rather than the longsighted one.
If there are plus and minus powers in the same eye for distance, it’s called "mixed astigmatism".

Astigmatism has to do with the shape of your eye. That have lots of really precise instrumentation to look at the characteristics of your eye. Its not challenging. In fact, their technology is improving immeasurably with each passing year. I have no doubt in my mind that a lot of the eye issues that many of us suffer from will be eliminated in coming years. The need for glasses is already being addressed for many. The only thing holding most back in the fact that insurance companies refuse to pay for what they call an elective procedure. But in my personal opinion, a procedure that corrects your vision back to 20/20 is not an elective. I can’t class that in the same category as a face lift or a boob job. But whatever.
i really don’t know…but when i had my eye check up, the doctor said i have astigmatism…but i don’t know how he is sure its not farsightedenss/nearsightedness…
