The Best Contact Lens for Astigmatism

If you googled for Contact Lens Astigmastim and landed here you probably looking for information about the best contact lens to correct Astigmatism. First of all, an astigmatism is, simply put, a vision problem that related to hyperopia (farsightedness) and myopia (nearsightedness), which is caused by irregularly shaped cornea, or there is a defect in the eye’s crystalline lens.  Normally, your eye is almost a perfect sphere, with a lens in front where the light (and what you’re looking at) comes in, and on the inside, opposite the lens, is the retina, which is something like a screen where the image is “projected” by the lens. The retina has light receptors that, in turn, transmit an image to your brain, and you “see” that image that comes in as light through the lens and is projected on the retina and transferred to your brain as an image. This is a very simplistic description of sight, but it’s fine for our purposes. Now, if everything is working well, the image that comes through the lens is crisply focused as one image in the center of the retina. If the eye is astigmatic, then there are problems. The astigmatism focuses the image that comes through the lens in two focal points onto the retina – two images are seen, basically, due to the uneven shape of the eyeball.

How to Correct Astigmatism

Fortunately, sophisticated optics that we take for granted these days can be built into prescription glasses to correct this astigmatism, so that we only see one image – vision problem corrected!

This problem usually can be corrected using glasses, or refracted surgery and even there are natural ways to cure astigmatism.

If you have an astigmatism and want to wear contacts – then you’re in luck! Thanks to the advance technology today, nowadays most major contact manufacturers make lenses that can correct most astigmatisms. The problem of keeping the lens on your eye oriented properly for full vision correction is solved by making a part of the contact lens a little heavier (thicker) towards one side, and then uses gravity to keep the heavy side of the lens down, and keep the lens from turning on your eyeball. This is ingenious.

The lens type that used to correct astigmatism is called toric lens. You can wide range of toric lenses that available in the eye care store.

Toric contact lenses are specially designed to enable them to fit correctly against the eye’s surface. These lenses have two different powers or curvatures in them which are created at different angles to correct astigmatism, farsightedness and nearsightedness. Some toric contact lenses are design to be thick at the bottom part of the lens to keep the contact lens  stable on the eye when you blink or move your eyeballs.

In the past, the only contact lens prescribed that can correct astigmatism is RGP lenses – Rigid Gas Permeable, conventional hard lenses that allow oxygen through. But today, toric lenses are also available as regular spherical lenses, which are soft and disposable. There are also daily disposable and even colored toric lenses for astigmatism patient who wish to enhance their natural eye color.

RGP and Soft – Which One To Choose

Most astigmatics prefer soft lenses over the RGPs because they are more convenient and easier to adapt with. However, a small percentage of them find that they prefer RGPs over soft contacts because they retain their shape on the cornea better than soft lenses do and tend to provide slightly better vision. Some of them do not aware of this little difference but people who are particular about their vision might realize it.

So, what is the best lens for astigmatism?

Because of so many brands available in the market today, you might be confused which one to choose. The best is to get consultation and advice from your eye doctor and also get the prescription.

However, just for your reference, here are some popular toric lenses that have good reviews on the internet:

These lenses cost about $30 – $50 per box, but usually most contact lens retailers offer discount for bulk order,  this means the more you buy the more you will save. However, if you are the first timer, you are advised to purchase lenses in small volume, then buy for 6 months or 1 year stock if you feel comfortable with that particular brand. Hopefully Contact Lens Astigmatism .com has helped you to find what you need!

I was trying for toric contacts and tried
1.accuvue advance for astigmatism
2.vertex toric
3.soflens66 toric
4.biomedics toric
and now 5.purevision torics
the problem is when I focus on the objects, I feel blurred for a sec and again the vision comes back but its happening very frequently.
And also when reading on the computer and in the air-conditioner , I feel more discomfort with the lens.May be because of the lens rotation.
If they are toric lens users who feel good using them ,any Suggestions on these.PLEASE

I have a small prescription of -1.75 in both of my eyes and I have astigmatism in both as well. However, in my left eye I have lenticular astigmatism instead of regular astigmatism. As a result, contact lenses are hard to fit because of the lack of soft front surface toric lenses available. My question is, with my eyes am I still able to have laser eye surgery done (Lasik, PRK, etc.)? Thanks

i really want a green/light brown colour (i have dark brown eyes) but i can’t seem to find anywhere to buy them. i don’t mind paying a bit extra or getting it from abroad but i want to buy from a trusted website that others have bought from.

so, please send me some website links that deliver in UK for coloured contact lenses for astigmatism.

much thanks :)

I’ve been wearing monthly contacts for a few years now, but I’d like to switch to dailies.

I have astigmatism and I use the following:

Softlens 66 toric – Sph: -0,75 Cyl: -1,25 Axe: 70°

But when I look at availability in dailies, the axes are limited to: 20, 90, 160 and 180°.

Would it be ok to use the closest value (90)? Would this affect my vision a lot?

Thanks very much!
Thanks for the answers.
Just thought I’d add some details: I have my regular eye checkup scheduled in 2 months, I just wanted to hold out until then and dailies seems a better choice. Also, where I live, I can go and buy any lens I want over the counter without a prescription.

I am currently wearing daily disposable soft contact lenses (Acucue oasys for astigmatism) but I am not satisfied with them. My vision isn’t as good as they are with glasses and also I find that after a few hours my eyes feel dry and I can ‘feel’ the contact lens on my eye. My optometrist told me I have dry eye and I am taking eye drops but they don’t provide much relief.
I wear the lenses occasionally but would wear them more often if they were more comfortable! I am about -5.00 DS in both eyes with -1.50DC astigmatism in left eye and -1.75DC in right eye.
What type of contact lenses and wearing regimen would be suitable someone like myself? I would like to wear them to work a few times a week, also jogging and swimming.
Would changing brands help? Or would rigid lenses be more appropriate since I have dry eye and high astigmatism? Do daily disposable rigid contact lenses even exist? I heard rigid lenses can be uncomfortable but if it gives me better vision and doesn’t dry out my eyes I would be happy to try them.
P.S I am seeing my optometrist next week but I am interested in gathering other opinions as well.

I wear contacts[just got them]
on my right eye, i wear a normal soft contact lense because the astigmatism in that eye is onle 0.50.

in my left eye, the astigmatism is 1.25…my eye doctor said i could wear a normal soft lense thats NOT toric. I just want to know, is there going to be any problems if i DO switch to a normal one? Because the toric is very uncomfortable, and i took the normal contact lense and put it in my left just to see how much better it would be, and it felt GREAT.

My right eye has astigmatism of -.75 cylinder 020 axis dia 14.5 Is my astigmatism good enough so I can wear normal contacts? I’ve tried torics and they’re extremely uncomfortable and sometimes they blur my vision. The normal contact in my left eye feels very comfortable though, there’s a small amount of astigmatism in my left eye but i’m able to wear normal contacts with ease. Can I do this with my right eye?

About 10 years ago I went to the eye doctor, and got fitted for contact lenses. I have astigmatism, so I was fitted with soft toric lenses that are weighted on one side. After about six months, I ended up just going back to glasses.

I am a network technician by trade. Frequently this requires me to look under desks, or perform other tasks in which my head is rotated to peer under furniture or something similar. As soon as my head was not perfectly straight, gravity caused my weighted lenses to rotate which made my vision go out of focus.

My (then) eye doctor told me there really wasn’t a fix for the issue. That was a decade ago. I am curious if they now have developed lenses for people with astigmatism that don’t have that problem.

Can I wear soft contacts if I have astigmatism?

I have had astigmatism for over 7 years. I am tired of wearing glasses because i know that don’t help correct my vision. I also tried wearing hard contacts but they are such a pain that i gave up on them. My doctor advises me that i cant get soft contacts for my astigmatism, am i allowed to wear contacts?

I used air optix the last time I had contacts but it’s been about 6 months since then. I remember asking to try out the acuvue advanced for astigmatism but I can’t remember which one felt better! haha. Has anyone used both brands? If so, which do you prefer

maybe I’m just being cheap because the acuvue are cheaper now (even though the lenses don’t last as long) and I’m just trying to save money, plus it’s acuvue so I don’t see how it can be that bad. but maybe air optix is the new acuvue and I should just pay a little more and stick with it
it’s between air optix for astigmatism and acuvue oasys for ast. (I accidentally said acuvue advanced)

I’m looking for a new brand of soft contacts to wear, since I’ve already gotten 3 eye infections in the past few months with the Bausch + Lomb PureVision Toric ones I’m currently using (despite being very careful about cleaning them and whatnot.. I feel like it’s an issue with the contacts rather than the solution or my personal eyecare habits.)

I’ve tried Acuvue Oasys before and can’t wear that brand; they’re extremely uncomfortable.

So.. any recommendations for contact lenses that are good for someone with astigmatism and sensitive eyes?

Also, since my glasses correct astigmatism and my contacts don’t it’s really noticable when I change between them (world warping etc). I have astigmatism that seems to be getting worse. Are there contact lenses that are 1-day wear to correct this? My vision is -8, which is pretty bad, if that makes a difference in my option. I’ve been wearing the 1-days b/c I seem to have sensitive eyes and ended up with a very bad infection years ago when I was wearing the 2-week lenses. My eye doctor felt it best to use the 1-day lenses to keep things as clean as possible (I do end up wearing them for 2 days against his orders just to cut the cost a little).

I want contact lenses badly, hahahahaha! But my parents don’t allow me to wear them because they think I might refuse to take them off at the right time and they think I’ll get lazy. I don’t think I would act like that. I can wear my eyeglasses instead if there’s a time I shouldn’t wear them!

So uhh, that’s all my sharing, lol. Can a person with astigmatism like me wear contacts? :) I would appreciate if you guys answer. Thanks!!
